In the shape of flying phoenix which incubates eggs, in Jecheon, if you follow the 82nd road and go straight to Cheongpoong, you can find the mountain which was raised on the right side of the lake. The mountain peak which was raised in the center of Bibongsan Mountain is the head of phoenix and ridges which spreads to both sides is the wing. The shape of this sight shows that phoenix flies like the name of this mountain. This mountain is not famous because of Geumsu Mountain and Woraksan Mountain but this mountain and Cheongpoong cultural asset town is very famous, naturally and relatively. This mountain cannot be famous but this is pleasantly a plump mountain because this has eight excellent spots. Bibongsan Mountain is surrounded with towns such as Yeongok-li which is the starting point for Gyesan-li, Yangpyeong-li, Dogok-li, Daeryu-li, Sin-li and so on. Town towards Cheongpoong is Multae-li. These towns are connected by ring roads and if you go through the ring roads, it will turn in a complete circle. If you go deep from Dogok-li or Yangpyeong-li to the lake which is at the end of the road and if you stand on the lakeside, you can feel that you are come to an island.
One zelkova which is may be over 200 years old greets travelers. Hiking may begin by going through a concrete pavement which is located at the pen of the town around the pond. You can find one of these eight excellent spots if you look around this place. Behind the pen, like two eggs of phoenix, two mountain peaks attract travelers. Originally, Bibongsan Mountain in the shape of a bird incubating eggs and then flying to the sky for getting food and Bibongsan Mountain which was raised behind the two mountain peaks looks extraordinary.
Yeongok-li section (Town which is located around the pond ∼ Top of this mountain∼ Gyesan-li). Total time for hiking: 1 hour 40 minutes. Time for sections: Yeongok-li Motan(Around pond)town - (30 minutes) - Turn-off - (7 minutes) - Top of this mountain - (15 minutes) - Turn-off - (30 minutes) - Seongwhangdang(Shrine to the village deity) - (15 minutes) - Gyesan-li
Concrete road which is located at the town around the pond is vent to the left side of the pen and spreads to the other pen, and then the concrete road is broken. Main trail spreads to the right side before this trail enters the second pen. This trail is covered with kudzu vines and raspberry vines, but direction board is tied to the branch so you can find this easily.
The path to Yeongok-li is considerably steep. But this that is fleecy and safe for you your foot. If you go up among the forests which are covered with oriental oaks and pine trees for 5 minutes, you can find a large site. There are tombs, but burial mound was collapsed thus you cannot recognize the shape of tombs.
If you go up further from the tombs, you can find the rope which is tied to the tree in this section. Ways are steep and you should use handle. If you go straight up for 30 minutes, you can reach the meeting point with the way from Gwangui-li Bongjeongsa. If you go more from here, you can look down on Cheongpoong Lake. At the way point before 150 m from the top of the mountain, you can find proper rest area which shows wonderful sights. You can see the lakeside with a wind and Dong Mountain, Jaksung Mountain, Geumsu Mountain and so on from this area.
Street corner spreads to the top of Bibongsan Mountain and in this course, there is observation post for forest fire, and next to the post, you can find the monument and which means the top of Bibongsan Mountain. Monument which was installed by Jecheon-city is Oseok. This show 'Sin-li 1.9 km' and 'Gyejanggol 2.1 km'. But if you want to find the real peak, you should go more about 10m and you can find the signpost. And this signpost shows 'Yeongok-li 1.7 km, Gyesan-li 1.8 km, Daeryu-li 1.5 km and Gwangui-li 1.5 km.' At the top of Bibongsan Mountain, one handsome pine tree stands and if you stand next to this tree, you can see Woraksan Mountain to the southeast side at a distance.
If you want to descend from this mountain, you can select 'Gyesan-li' side. The name 'Gyesan' is not in the same class as 'Bibongsan Mountain'. Because 'Bibongsan Mountain(mountain of flying phoenix) has a high quality. When you go down to Gyesan-li from top of the mountain, under 10m of street corner, you can find mossy stonework. This place is good for resting and this was made with elaborate technology and this may be the trace of mountain fortress.
If you go down through the steep section for 5 minutes, ways become relatively gentle. You can find the turn-off which let you down to Gwangui-road for 10 minutes. Way to Gwangui-li is so steep but you can find ropes which are tied to the trees. And the signpost indicates that 'from Bibongsan Mountain to this place is 0.4 km and to Gwangui-li 0.8 km and Gyesan-li 1.4 km.'
If you pass the turn-off of Gwangui-li, you can find several tombs. Trail is connected following the ridges which are really comfortable for walking. You can reach to barren soil and if you distract your attention to see the higher place, you can find the top of Bibongsan Mountain in a spiral shape.
From turn-off of Gwangui-li, if you go down 0.9 km further, you can find the turn-off and this turn-off lets us go down to Gyesan-li and Dogok-li. In this place, you can find Gyesan-li if you go 0.5 km further. This place is shadowed by zelkova which is may be 200 years old. Around this place, like the trace of Seongwhangdang, you can find the trace which is piled with rocks. Stonework is about 50cm and this is covered with green moss. When people did not know cars, Seongwhangdang which is shortcut from Gyesan-li to Dogok-li was very important for people. But nowadays, this is buried with moss and only the name remains.
The way from ‘Seongwhangdang' to 'Gyesan-li' shows policeman's helmets. In the center of these policeman's helmets, ways which are scarlet with these policeman's helmets spread. You can walk with flowers about 200m. If you go through the abandoned forest road and then pass the fields of peppers and tombs, you will find the ways here and there, and if you go down for 7~8 minutes, you can stop at asphaltic way. This is the starting point and you can find direction board and signpost.
Yeongok-li as the starting point, if you go straight up to the top of Bibongsan Mountain, and then if you want to go down to Gyesan-li, it takes about 1 hour 30 minutes with the distance of about 3.5 km. The way to go up from Yeongok-li is considerably steep, but besides going to the top of the mountain, the ways of ridges to Gyesan-li are good for walk. If you hike without a car from Yeongok-li, and if you go up to the peak and come back down to Gyesan-li, you have to walk about 40 minutes to the starting point.
